Why San Antonio concrete cracks — and which cracks you can prevent

Clay soil, heat, missing joints, and bad base: what actually causes residential concrete cracks in San Antonio and the Hill Country, and what a correct pour does about it.

Every concrete slab will have joints, and many will show a hairline somewhere over a decade. That is not the same thing as a driveway that splits down the tire path in year two. In San Antonio the usual villains are soil movement, a missing or late joint, a thin slab, and a base that was never compacted.

Clay and caliche are not a surprise

Parts of Bexar County move. North-side limestone lots move less but still need a base. We cannot repeal soil mechanics. We can strip organics, compact a flexible base, pour enough thickness, and put control joints where the slab will want to crack anyway — so the crack is straight, at the joint, and not across the middle of the patio.

Joints are a design, not a decoration

A 20-by-20 patio with no interior joints is hoping. We layout joints based on slab size, thickness, and where the eye already has a line (against a step, a border, a stamp grout). Saw cuts happen on time, not “when we get back to it.” Late joints are how you get the random crack that the stamp then has to live with.

Heat and curing

A June pour in New Braunfels without a curing plan is how you get surface crazing. We time decorative work, keep the surface from drying out too fast, and will reschedule if the forecast is a bad idea. That is not delay for its own sake. It is the difference between a finish that still looks like stone in August and one that dusts.

When replacement is the honest answer

If a driveway has faulted at the garage, ponds water, or rocks when you walk it, patching the top is theater. Demo, base, new slab. We would rather lose a small repair job than pour a bandage. That is the work SATEX is set up to do across San Antonio, Boerne, Bulverde, and New Braunfels.
